HOW TO MOUNT USB DRIVE ?

I have a USB drive attached to my pi. When I installed Rasbian I was under the impression this would be mounted automatically? If it is I can't find it, I want to be able to share its contents on my network and see no simple (linux noob) means of doing this. My attempts at following various posts online about mounting and sharing have resulted in me being completly locked out of Rasbian via SSH . Attaching HDMI lead to the pi and watching boot on screen shows the root is locked. This has resulted in four reinstalls of Rasbian so far.
Where are some quality instructions on how to achieve what I am after.? Trial and error simply result in exasperation .
