Rasbian lite and i3wm

Fri Jan 20, 2017 6:56 pm

Hi,

I got some spare time and i started messing around with my Pi Zero.
I wanted to try and run Rasbian lite ( release 2017-01-11) with i3wm (https://i3wm.org/).
So i installed Rasbian lite to a clean micro sd.
Then i run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xinit
sudo reboot

sudo apt-get install i3
sudo startx

i3wm starts, i can see the bottom bar and move my mouse pointer and before 10 seconds are past the screen will black out.
Pi zero is still reachable with ssh.
No error's in the logs.

I tried clean install Rasbian lite to micro sd card 3x with above steps and some extra like adding i3wm repository.

other time i tried with trowing this in the mix (is that prog still relevant?)
sudo apt-get install rpi-update
sudo rpi-update

But every time i get the same result. startx ..... i3 shows on screen, i can move my mouse, and then POOF black screen.

Could anybody give me advice?
Easy to replicate? Install rasbian lite to a clean micro sd, boot your pi zero and install i3 (After installing xorg ofcourse).

Hi could somebody try and replicate the problem on their Zero so at least i know its not a hardware issue (i don't think its a hardware issue as Rasbian with desktop runs ok)

Hey,

This probably won't help you, but I tried all your steps on my rPI 2B and i3wm works without any hiccups.
I'm using Raspbian 16.11 [console only] via BerryBoot with kernel 4.4.50v7
Just thought I'd confirm that it's not i3wm that's broken, but rather something with your pi or the way you set things up.

Best of luck with your endeavours. Hope someone else has a Pi Zero to test it with (cause I don't sadly)
