reinstalling raspbian on the same sd card?

Tue Jan 10, 2017 5:37 pm

My raspberry pi 2 will not boot right, and the idiot I was, put it on automatic boot.
I don't have any more sd cards, so I need to reinstall the os on the same sd card.
If anyone can help me out here, It would mean a lot.
Thank you! :D

Easy!

Just imagine that microSD card had never been used with a Raspberry Pi before.

Visit https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ and download
RASPBIAN JESSIE WITH PIXEL

Follow the linked document to install it. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md

That's all. (Installation from a . img file automatically destroys the previous content and formatting of the card and gives you a clean freshly installed OS - no other preparatory steps are needed.)

Of course, any configuration, scripts or other work you have saved on the microSD card will also be destroyed as part of the same process.

What Windows version do you use?

In short,

Go to command prompt, Windows.
Type diskpart
Type list disk

See what disk is the sdcard to burn image on. Example disk 4.

Type select disk 4

Be sure you now have the right disk selected. Again be sure! You will get no warning.

Type clean

Type exit

Your sdcard is now without partitions.

Download sdformat. Or use Windows.
Select your disk and format.

Now use win32diskimager to burn your new image.

Hope this helps.

use win32diskimager to burn your new image.
Why are the preceding steps necessary? After 5 years of user experience the Raspberry Pi Foundation don't seem to feel it is something they should include in their documentation.

Well done.

All I did was point you to the 'official' documentation by the Raspberry Pi Foundation...

If I have a minecraft server on mine, would it delete everything my friends and I have done on the game?

That would come under the heading of "any configuration, scripts or other work you have saved on the microSD card will also be destroyed as part of the same process."

So Yes, everything previously on the microSD card will be deleted.

Of course, since you have resurrected a topic nearly three years old, the advice to download and install Raspbian Jessie is no longer appropriate as that OS has been twice superceded. At the time of writing in September 2019 the current supported Raspberry Pi Operating System is Raspbian Buster.

I would also add that formatting the SD card does nothing but wear it out faster

With Etcher the partition table and format are all overwritten in one step :D

Yes. Writing a new image will overwrite anything previously on the card (your server and all related data will be gone). You should get a new SD card and write Raspbian to that, then copy your Minecraft folder and any other data or scripts your server needs from the old card to the new one.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?
