Serial port issues

I use a RP 2 to controll my 3D printer using Marlin firmware. It has been working perfectly for well over a year. The other day I started having problems with the printer controller board (Rambo) and after a lot of frustration, found that the issue was a connector that had corrosion and needed, to be replace. I replaced it and then found I could not connect to the Rambo board. I made sure that I was using the proper baud rate. When I tried to connect, I got a bit of garbage and nothing else. I connected to the controller card from my computer and had no problem. This only happens when trying to access from the RP2. I tried another (backup) SD card and still had the same issue.
When working with Serial communications in the windows environment, I always had to make sure that the parity, data bits, stop bit was correct along with the proper baud. I've never had to worry about that with the RP (Maybe it just happened to be set correctly, so I never had to change it)
I am using Pronterface on the pi and Marlin firmware on the Rambo.
I am looking for ideas about what else I can look at or change to get this to work. I just bought the RP3 to use with another machine, but now I can't get this one to work.
Please help if you can.
