Login Troubles

Wed Nov 02, 2016 5:28 pm

I have been running the latest Rasbian Jesse os for sometime now and just 2 days ago it stopped letting me login.

I enter my user pi then password or my other user and password, it accepts the login and appears to be going to the desktop but goes right back to the login screen. if I try a wrong user or password it does tell me incorrect. re-boot after re-boot shows the same problem.

I tried a fresh install on another sd card but now I get "waiting sd card (partitions setting)". Also anytime I try a do over with the new install, windows is constantly telling something is wrong with the sd card. Could this be because it is formatted differently with SD Formatter?

Totally Bummed!

First check you have put in what you think is the password, - the right language keyboard, and you have checked for Caps Lock, checked you have the capitial where you need them, that numlock is on when using the key pad. You can not see what you type in the password field so check these are working as expected in the account name field first.

By default, a hard boot will log you on to the Pi account. Once you have reformatted the card with SDFformatter, you can program the SD card from zero. On your first boot this time, check in the Pi config menu, that the auto boot to GUI using the pi account option is enabled. This is not really a security issue, as if they have physical access to reboot the pi, they can also just take the SD card out of the Pi to read your secrets, or put the whole Pi in their pocket.

If you are running headless, remember you can not log on as root via ssh, even if you set a password.
Use Xrdp or the RealVNC server.
