(Solved) Ethernet not working?

Mon Sep 03, 2012 12:07 pm

Hi - I have just tried to use an Ethernet cable with my pi, and it does not seem to know that it is there. The internet seems to still not work, still coming up with the same error page.

It may be that I am using a wireless extender, but at the moment I am hoping that it is something else (and easy to fix! ;) ).

Thanks.

You need to give more information about what you are trying to do. What is the relevance of the extender?

Start by getting the ethernet working using a cable from the RPi plugged into your router.

Um, I kind of hoped that using a wireless extender would be the same as plugging it into the router. It's pretty much the same.

(By wireless extender I mean a unit that is plugged into the router upstairs, and sends the wireless signal downstairs through the mains, which is then collected by a second unit downstairs. The RPi is plugged into this second device. It has always worked before.)

It isn't a wireless extender - I and I expect everyone else thought you were talking about a Wi-Fi unit. You mean a powerline adaptor. It uses the mains wires, so how can it be 'wireless'?

On principle I should not offer any further help as those things are the work of the devil and IMHO should never have been allowed to be deployed.

However, you are correct that their operation should be transparent and appear basically no different from a length of ethernet cable.

But I still say to first get your RPi working with a piece of real cable to your router.

Sorry - I found the source problem! The setting on the upstairs unit was incorrect, and turning it on correctly works fine.

Thanks anyway - and sorry for getting the name wrong (that's what I thought I saw on the website of the extender thingy).

Thanks.

Hi

I'm intrigued why are they the work of the devil?

I use them to connect my two routers together to extend my wireless network (one router is just used as a wireless access point) and I have a third one to allow my iPod to communicate with my model railway. Never had any issues with these since I installed them.

Cheers

They are wideband transmitters which are polluting the RF spectrum. For decades we have had band plans, power limits, regulations, licensing etc to minimise interference and enable efficient use of the resource. The makers, purveyors and users of these devices just ignore all that.

The arguments are (and have been) going on in other places, so lets not start them here.
