Yellow square on PI

Thu Aug 25, 2016 1:00 pm

Hello there. I've come across these forums in looking for an issue with my current RPI3. I bought one and it came in the mail yesterday. When looking, it appears to be related to GPU over-heating, but I wanted to double check, and get some insight.

So, the rpi3 experiences a small orange square in the top right corner of the screen when in Kodi. (I have osmc installed on it). It only does it in the menus, and not when playing back video. (The yellow square fades once the video starts, but comes back once back in Kodi).

The googles said that it was related to the GPU overheating, but when looking in system information, it's not hot. I also do not know why it would only appear in Kodi and go away once video plays (Unless it's done that way be default). I have the pi completely out of it's case, and it's cool to the touch. It did come with two smaller heatsinks, but being as i've had a rpi since model A (the 256 mb model), and have been advised against using them since it can do more damage than good, I didn't put it on the pi.

I also thought maybe it was a power issue, but read that was a red or rainbow colored box, which I do not have. (Also, it is the exact same power adapter that I used for my rpi2, which didn't have the issue (It's the official one that came with the rpi2). Does anybody have any suggestions what I could do to fix the problem?

I had read there is a config option you can set to disable the box, and since I am not experiencing any performance issues at all with the pi, would it be advised to do this?

it means it is throttling the CPU because of heat
...
slap a small ceramic heat sink on the main CPU

This looks like the one that came with the pi, that I threw away because the previous versions were not advised to use. I also didn't see anything in the documentation related to using a heatsink on the chips.. :(

Looks like I will have to order another one and hope for the best.

If a brand new RPi3 overheats like that you should send it back on an RMA for a replacement, it's faulty.

It was purchased by a user on ebay, I am not sure if the raspi foundation would RMA it being it's third party. I'm pretty sure that the ebay seller has a return policy but fighting with ebay users over returns is like pulling teeth.

eBay is pretty easy as long as you send it all through messages and as a case. They see everything and the buyer is very well protected.

Through saying that, I've had it appear on my Pi3 and I just upped the input voltage a little and it disappeared ( it a dull brown orange iirc) think I was around 5.2/5.3V when it went, but that was through thick cables and an 100W variable PSU so I could alter it.
I thought the normal rainbow had gone a bit wrong, never realised till now it was an 'apparent heat warning'. Not sure why the orange went when the voltage went up, wasn't that hot either.

Still mine work perfectly fine now even if hooter than i would like for this sort of device.

You've been sold a dud (it's probably had some GPIO abuse and is likely to fail completely at any time) I hope you've not lost too much money. Spend $35 to get a brand new one.

The one I bought was a brand new one, it's just not directly from Element3, it was purchased from a reseller. I was able to find the ones I threw away, and placed them on the system and it appears to be fine now, but I will monitor it for further issues.
