3TB Drive USB several formats

Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:35 pm

Hello. I'm gettin' mad with this issue.

I have a 3TB drive connected via USB to the rasp.

I've tried the following: (under RASPBMC)

formatted under OSX 10.8 in FAT32->It mounts ok and works
formatted under WIN7 in NTFS -> It doesn't mount
formatted under OSX 10.8 in HFS+->It doesn't mount

I need NTFS or HFS+ in order to store big mobies (>4.3GB), or, if I could format and mount ext4, it would be ok, too.

I've installed all packages for reading/writing ntfs and hfs+ (ntfs-3g,ntfsprogs,ntfsutils,hfsplus,hfsutils,hfsprogs, etc...) with no success.

I've tried the commands sudo mount -t hfsplus /dev/sda2 /media/CINE i.e. and it says not a HFS+ partition or bad superblock.

The same with NTFS.

I write /dev/sda2 because the 3TB is GPT partitionated.

What am I doing wrong?

I hope you can help me, and if the solution is ext4, please tell me how can I setup it.

Thank you.

I also have an NTFS formatted 3TB drive that won't mount. When I look at dmesg I see:
[ 166.657599] NTFS-fs error (device sdb1): parse_ntfs_boot_sector(): Volume size (2TiB) is too large for this architecture. Maximum supported is 2TiB. Sorry.
[ 166.657656] NTFS-fs error (device sdb1): ntfs_fill_super(): Unsupported NTFS filesystem.
The funny thing is that before I switched to the most recent Raspbian image I was able to mount the drive and use it just fine. The image I was using is only about a month old. So some time recently they've managed to break their support for large NTFS filesystems. :(

I've figured out how to fix my problem; I hope yours is the same. All I had to do was the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g
Then it mounted just fine.

Installing the package ntfs-3g also solved the problem for me, thanks!!

(Currently writing up a summary how to use the Raspi as a SAMBA server, in German, and this came in handy).

Code: Select all

mkfs.ext4
see "man mkfs.ext4" for details. You don't need to install anything, ext4 is the "standard" Linux filesystem.
