rPi does not see new SDD

Thu Jun 16, 2016 7:24 am

I connected a brand new SSD to the rPi 2B.

this command:

Code: Select all

sudo ls -ltr /dev/sd*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 Jun 16 17:05 /dev/sda
... obviously lists the new SSD as /dev/sda

However,

Code: Select all

sudo lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 13fd:3920 Initio Corporation
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
... will not show the sda device.

If I unplug it, sda is gone.

Code: Select all

fdisk -l
does not show sda either.

Out of interest, I plugged this SSD into a Windows 10 machine; it is visible, can be initialised and formatted.

Any ideas?

right we're getting to the nub of the problem here
it is a USB3 device there are reports of USB3 devices being problematic - go for a cheep USB2 one instead
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB-2-0- ... 64774.html [others are available] check ebay etc...

[*You were right on the money!!*]

Now I can see the drive... I remembered I had one of these multi-drive bays with their own 12V power source.

Code: Select all

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/mmcblk0p1 8192 137215 129024 63M c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/mmcblk0p2 137216 15130623 14993408 7.2G 83 Linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 111.8 GiB, 120034123776 bytes, 234441648 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: 10D53B0C-9832-462C-A721-70F094B38E0B

Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sdb1 34 262177 262144 128M Microsoft reserved
/dev/sdb2 264192 234440703 234176512 111.7G Microsoft basic data
For completeness sake -- what /var/log/messages should show when a USB drive is connected (at least something like that)
