Rapberry pi2 model b hangs with usb hub attached

Wed May 25, 2016 12:23 am

Hi,

I'm trying to find out what could be the problem with my Pi2 b which seems to hang after quite some time - so intermittently.

I bought a usb 3.0 hub and no it's not recommended but when I tested it, it seemed to be working really well when connecting usb sticks, wifi adapter or hard disk .
This is it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

I bought an official PSU to power the thing when connecting a HDD but it seemed fine without power when only connecting low amp devices.

So one day I noticed that whilst the hub was connected (nothing connected to the hub at the time) I was running get_iplayer and downloading some programs, the hub hung. Red power light and orange light on steady and wi-fi adapter no longer flashing.

The hub was connected without any power at the time. I wondered if I should always have power to the hub when connected so I tried that. It didn't hang when idling but then I tried a get_iplayer sesson which would last over an hour.

At some point it hung again. I did same test with it unplugged just in case and it completes the download.

I don't see anything in logs that make any sense to me but as this is certainly stopping the pi dead I doubt if anything will be recorded. It's intermittent as to how long I can go before it does that and all the tests that I did with a 2.5" drive connected with power attached didn't cause any problems.

I am fairly new to linux / unix so am a bit stumped at how to find out what the problem is. Having 2 power supplies handy which are both good afaik and swapping them over eliminates things like unstable psu to fair degree.

I've searched for problems (other than typical backpower threads) that might be similar to my situation but can't find anything and so far it seems that it relates to constant downloading via get_iplayer as the trigger but I haven't really tried a great deal else. It has only hung when doing this task.

Currently I am returning the hub but I am curious if anyone can give me some reasons other than the obvious (psu unstable - too much power drain - backpower etc which I'm fairly sure aren't the problem). Any similar experiences in other words.

At some point I would like to choose a usb 3 hub that I can use on my NAS and Pi but the recommended list shows very little and those that it does show as usb 3 aren't available anymore. It needs updating badly.
