Wifi issue

Wed May 18, 2016 10:36 pm

Hello,

As the main "Wifi issue" post is now locked, I am starting a new thread (as advised by the moderator)

Background
_ I have a Rpi3, but I can't get Wifi to work with my router.
_ Interestingly, I can get Wifi to work with other routers.

My investigation so far

Action 1
_ As I had a SD card with the version of the OS that could not manage Wifi, I passed by a friend's flat to use the SD card reader of his computer.
_ I got my SD card formatted, an up-to-date version of the OS installed.
_ At that stage, I was able to start my RPi, and to connect very easily to my friend's router.
_ My first fear (hardware issue) was therefore ruled out - once provided with the correct version of the OS, the RPi is working.

Action 2
_ Once back home, nothing. I could not connect to my router.
_ Nonetheless, as I am a BT customer, I have access to BT Wifi as well from my flat... and that was working fine.
_ My second fear (hardware damage on the way back home) could therefore be ruled out - RPi is still working fine, it just does not work with my router.

Action 3
_ It looks like there is a known issue with some channels a Wifi router may use.
_ I disconnected from BT Wifi, ran iwlist wlan0 scan, and noticed that my router is currently using Channel 11. Interestingly enough, this is the channel mentioned for BT Wifi as well.
_ Unless I am missing something, this means that there is no point in switching to another channel.

Question
_ I am now running out of ideas - Is there some sort of set-up (possibly at wifi router level) that could explain this? I am surprised because none of my other devices (and none of the devices belonging to visiting friends) seems to have an issue attaching to my Wifi router - it is only my RPi3

I am really not an expert, neither with Wifi nor with Linux, and I am an absolute beginner with Rpi. Apologise if i am missing something obvious

Thanks in advance,

Bruno

Make sure your SSID is not hidden.
You are using WPA2 (not WEP)
You are set up at 2.4GHz or mixed (Not 5GHz only).
Your DHCP pool is large enough for everything on your network.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.
