Official WiFi dongle stopped working after update to 4.4.9

Tue May 17, 2016 12:44 pm

Hi, A long time ago I built a Raspberry Pi laptop.viewtopic.php?f=40&t=67312
It has been working great since then, a few days ago I updated to the latest Jessie build, but the WiFi dongle that I was using WLU6331 (official raspberry pi) stopped working, I have two and neither are working.
However if I plug in another nameless WiFi dongle it works great, I'm using it to send this message.
If I type lsusb with the working WiFi I get.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1d57:fa60 Xenta
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 067b:2506 Prolific Technology, Inc. Kaser 8gB micro hard drive
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
if I do the same with either of the Raspberry Pi dongles I get this.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1d57:fa60 Xenta
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 067b:2506 Prolific Technology, Inc. Kaser 8gB micro hard drive
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
So the WiFi dongle is not being seen at all?
This was on my old, upgraded Raspbian, I've now got exactly the same result with a fresh install.
The Hardware is a Pi2, the WiFi dongle is connected direct to one of the onboard USB.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 4.4.9-v7+ #884 SMP Fri May 6 17:28:59 BST 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux
Any suggestions welcomed.
Regards, Kevin.

Strange. Seems to be okay here.

Code: Select all

On the very outside chance that both WiFi dongles had gone duff, I tried one of them on a Pi3 which I have and the lsusb reports it, as yours does as a Broadcom Corp. so the dongle if working. Anything I can try?

Ok, looks like I have 2 problems. The first is that the dongle didn't seem to like being used through a 30cm USB cable, it used to be fine (that's life), this is so I can bring the WiFi dongle out side the case, the second is that one of the Official WiFi dongles has died, in fact after a bit of hot swapping of the dongles, both official WiFi dongles seem to have died!. So I'm not very impressed about that. :-(
Regards, Kevin.
