Mouse and Keyboard non responsive after boot

Just got my first raspberry pi 3 (or any raspberry pi for that matter) so please forgive me if I'm dumb. I did the initial setup using NOOBS lite (the full NOOBS download gave an error saying the compressed file was corrupt)... During the OS install, my mouse and keyboard both worked fine as I had to type in my WIFI password and I could see the mouse move.
When raspbian boots, I see the raspberry pi logo and the menus on the top taskbar, the mouse cursor is in the middle of the screen but it doesn't move at all and the keyboard also seems unresponsive to any presses.
I tried plugging in a different mouse (wireless USB dongle), with no luck. I tried booting with just the mouse installed, then just the keyboard installed, but I can't seem to get any response.
I'm using a USB-power wall wart that I use to charge my phone, spec'd for 2 amps. When I'm in the boot menu, I can hit the num-lock and caps-lock on my keyboard and the appropriate LEDs turn on, but when the desktop is showing, I can't get the LEDs to appear. I tried unplugging and replugging the usb connections and booted multiple times.
Finally, I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable to connect to the monitor, which is the best I could do.
Any advice?
