RPI3, NOOBS OK, Raspian NOK

Tue Apr 19, 2016 2:42 pm

Hi there,

I started, on my RPI3, by trying to install Raspian, to no avail, on 2 different SD cards.
I basically copied over all file of the Raspian archive, over to a properly formatted new SD card, booted it on the RPI3 (booting kernel fine), but at the end of the kernel boot period, it just panicked on (from memory), VFS: can’t mount block(X,Y), saying it can’t find root …

Now, it seems bizarre to me, as I’ve now tried NOOBS and it partitions and install just fine on the same SD cards.

How do people install Raspian ? Is a properly partitioned SD card required, unlike for NOOBS ?
I have to say I’m a bit confused, despite being aware on how to install Debian …

Any input welcome !

Raspbian Jessie is downloaded as a .ZIP and unpacks to an .IMG

Oh dear, I'm so ashamed of myself. Thanks !
I totally missed the img had to be written block by block, probably because my Mac would open its content by double-clicking.
Works OK now.

That's good news.

The .img file overwrites everything, there is never any need to partition or format the card first.
