Pi 3 boot problem

Mon Apr 18, 2016 7:41 pm

Hi, just bought myself a Pi 3. my first adventure with little computers.
Loaded Raspian, worked first time, and the next half dozen times I booted up. Then nothing, no rainbow screen, just a constant red light.
I reloaded Raspian on the 16gb SD card that came with the Pi, no joy. I tried a 32gb card, nothing, found a 64gb (pinched it out of the wife's tablet, still nothing. Stole a 2gb out of my old phone, same again. I formatted all these cards with SD Formatter each time. I then tried NOOBS, IOT, Android and anything else I could find. Surely I can't have four bad SD's. I then tried Rune Audio out of desperation and it worked first time??? I don't particularly want an audio system cause then I will have to add DAC's Amps, speakers and lord knows what else. Any ideas anyone please??

Clean the 32GB sdcard with diskpart, then download and install the full raspbian image and write it to sdcard with diskimager.

Raspbian Jessie:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

DiskImager:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32d ... t/download

cmd (admin)
diskpart
list disk
select disk (e.g., 'select disk 2' if '2' is your sdcard)
clean
exit
exit

do not format sdcard, just write OS image using diskimager

after you sucessfully boot, go to start/menu, preferences/raspberry pi config, and Expand Filesystem

How are you trying to install Raspbian Jessie? Not NOOBS, right?

You also have the proper power supply, right?

Considering the fact that it worked fine before, and now no longer does may indicate you let the magic smoke out of the pi3. Or may need to turn it off for a few days, then try again (fuse).

Did you put too much voltage/power to the pi3 (like trying to use it in your car), or somehow damage the board or SoC?

My suggestion is replace it, and next time put it into a protective case.

Used the Pi power supply and pi case that were supplied by pi supply with the Pi. Was very careful handling everything.
Have tried Raspian full fat, Raspian Jessie, NOOBs, Android, Win 10 IOT and any thing else I could find, none worked but Rune Audio starts first time every time ????
I have ordered a shiny new 32gb SD card, I'll leave it a couple of days and then try again.

That doesn't mean much ('pi supply') What does the power supply indicate as volts and amps?

For pi3 you want:
5.1V 2.5A
5.25V 2.4A

It is highly unlikely it is the sdcard (how many did you try? 5?) it is more likely that it is the pi3 itself that is damaged. It is easy to determine.... go to BestBuy (or whereever) get a 32GB Samsung EVO+ HC-1/UHS-1 micro sdcard ($11 at BestBuy), load raspbian Jessie image, and if it doesn't work then you know.

Sorry Pi Supply is a large retailer here in the UK, I will check the power supply when I get home from work, I suppose I assumed as it came with with the Pi it would be correct, I will try to get hold of the SD card you suggest and try again.
Thanks for your help, will come back with the next thrilling installment
