The default if you have not changed it is:
User:pi
Password: raspberry

When typing the password you will not see anything not even ***.
Are you using a qwerty keyboard? (UK or US)
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

What OS are you installing? NOOBs or standalone? Raspbian Jessie is set to boot to GUI desktop without password by default.

By default Raspbian Jessie boots to the GUI (with user pi auto-logged in). The pi userid has the password raspberry, but you shouldn't need to enter it.

Have you changed that behaviour?
Have you destroyed the contents of /home/pi by accident?

Try building a fresh SDCard with a fresh copy of Raspbian and booting that.

Be sure to expand file system... This seems to be pretty common for those who dont.
