just bought a pi2b...trying to connect it to the Internet by LAN cable. Installed Noobs fine.

Won't connect. Ping www.google.com says unknown host.

The Internet connection is fine as my other computer works fine on same router. Green light next to cable on PI lights up....

I don't know what to do!

Very new to anything to do with the PI or programming, really...and all that I have read seems rather cryptic. Help please!

Thanks.

I'm new into linux and raspberry pi.

I have same problem here with Srilankanpi, when i plugged the ethernet cable it's connected and the network panel says : eth0 configured 169.254.x.x but when i ping google.com it says "unknown host"

I tried to plug it out and in again. After several trying, it's connected and says : eth0 configured 192.168.1.x then i can ping google.com and do internet stuff.

The problem is, when i reboot my raspberry pi, it comeback to show : eth0 configured 169.254.x.x again and i can't connect to internet to do such thing like update & upgrade system.

I have no problem on router and ethernet cable.

It's kinda depressing to me. All advice is appreciated.

Are you sure? OP never mentions the 169 address
when i plugged the ethernet cable it's connected and the network panel says : eth0 configured 169.254.x.x but when i ping google.com it says "unknown host"
The 169 address indicates that it doesn't get an address through DHCP
I have no problem on router and ethernet cable.
How did you establish that? Have you tried different ethernet cables and different ports on the router?

I am having the same problem. It often doesn't get an IP address, and I have to reboot the PI several times until it gets an IP.
Even I set a static IP when I don't get it from the DHCP I get no network connection.
If I get IP from the DHCP then even if i set it to static it works fine, until the next boot.
On the same port of the router, with the same cable my lap-top doesn't have any problem.

How is your RPi connected to your network? Is it wired or WiFi?

If wired then replace the cable between your RPi and the network switch, or try another port on the switch.
