I originally posted this question in a thread on the gaming forum but it looks pretty much dead to me. I'm hoping I can get some help here.

I am trying to get Retropie to work on raspberry but I can't get it to load emulationstation. I was linked to this tutorial .....

http://blog.petrockblock.com/2012/07/22 ... pberry-pi/

When ever I get done installing the emus I reboot then put the mame bios files in the Retropie/bios. I put a couple of games in the retropie mame roms folder and then type emulationstation and all I get is.....

Bash emulationstation command not found

I think there is more I need to do but I can't find an answer.

Can some one please help me?

Hardware:

Raspberry Pi 2 B
Generic 802.11 wifi
Standard generic keyboard
Generic Bluetooth mouse

Raspbian Jessie

My problem was not downloading it with the other emus during the install.

Now im getting the error message

X is running turn off x and turn off lxde. I have no idea what either is but when i hit control+alt+f1 then ^c it shuts down the gui. If i do a pkill x it makes me log in again

If you're using the latest version of Retropie, you don't need to go through the hassle involved in that tutorial. Here's what you need to do:

- Format the SD Card, and load the Retropie image onto it.
- Boot Retropie (it will resize the partition and reboot).
- Set up your input device (keyboard / controller) as prompted.
- Scroll left / right to the Retropie logo, and hit your 'A' button to go into it.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list where you'll find the Retropie Setup option - Hit 'A' again.
- Choose what you want to do from the menu (the default option installs the emulators).
- Wait for everything to install and for the Pi to reboot (it will take a bit of time, so I'm going to recommend you go make coffee while it does this).
- Enjoy.

It's that simple. No messing about. No installing things to install things to install things. Tutorials like that may have been useful for older versions of Retropie, but they're a little outdated now. You can even update the script from the menu.

Copying roms from a flash drive requires them to be in a particular directory. There's a wiki page that tells you everything you need to know about it (or you can do it manually by quitting emulation station and use the command line).

Also, if you aren't aware, whatever device you use to control everything, will also be used to control the hotkeys in the default emulators (select + X for menu, select + start to quit). Moving from the old one with keyboard shortcuts to a controller only setup was a bit strange, but understandably easier to deal with.

if I could get some help with the X and LXDE problem then I could tell you exactly how to have both.

Ok thanks to the good people here I have figured the problem.

You cannot run the emulationstation from with in the Jessie GUI so you have exit completely out of it. Here's how I did it.

Install the Raspbian Jessie image file to your card using the preferred method of your choice. While in raspi-config choose to boot to console. This makes it boot straight to the CLI.

Next follow the instructions here for setting up your keyboard found here. Follow it to a t until it asks if you want to use control+alt+backspace. The guide says choose no but you want to choose yes since this is the easiest way to turn X and LDXE off and take you to the CLI.

http://thepihut.com/blogs/raspberry-pi- ... ard-layout

Set everything under internationalism along with your keyboard then expand your file system to use all those gigs. Go to advanced options then open ssh and choose to enable it.

Now reboot pie and it will ask you for your login and password. Give both and it will give you a command line. Type start x to start the Desktop GUI.

Go ahead and type in start X then click the network icon at the right top of the GUI. When you see your network pop up click it then enter your credentials to log in to it.

Now that we have everything configured correctly we can set up Retropie by using the link below to maually install the latest version of Retropie.

https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Se ... stallation
Transfer games and bios using win32scp

Now exit the GUI using control+alt+backspace. Then type in emulationstation to start emu station. F4 will exit.

At this point if you want an MP3 player or video player you can download the latest version of omxplayer and KWEB.

I don't know why emu station will not start in X but it would be a lot easier if you could access it through a desktop icon or through a menu option.

Ok I just installed the 4 inch wave share LCD screen and now when I do emulationstation I get this...........

Lv10 AudioManager Error - unable to open sdl audio: ALSA: couldn't open audio device: no such file or directory

I've tried installing ALSA and changing it to headphone

I've also tried going into raspi-config and forcing the headphone jack but it still locks up on the emulationstation command and gives the same error message fro above.

Oddly enough it will load to the HDMI. And I do have sound coming from the jack if I play a song.

I installed Raspbian Jessie via NOOBS, I did a clean install i set up keyboard and did the ctrl alt and backspace, I change the boot to CLI i add my user name and password and that works but "start x" does nothing(gives -bash: start: command not found) but if I type "X" alone it goes to a black screen and does nothing What am I doing wrong to boot back into the GUI

Try startx instead of start x

Sometimes it takes a couple minutets to boot to the gui
