The EW-7811UTC requires a driver installing. I have compiled drivers for it, for raspbian, and it works at 5GHz.

If you are using raspbian, wheezy or Jessie, post the output of command uname -a and I can give you the commands to download and install the version of the driver you need.

Try this to download and install the driver

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-4.1.13-v7-826.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-4.1.13-v7-826.tar.gz
./install.sh
Reboot after installing the driver. Then you will need to configure your wifi to connect to your network.

Sorry to bother you again, but I'm having the same problem after updating raspbian, I tried the previous driver and it didn't work, my uname -a information is now:

Linux raspberrypi 4.1.17-v7+ #838 SMP Tue Feb 9 13:15:09 GMT 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

Thanks again for the help, and if you could tell me how to compile the driver myself so I don't run into this problem every time I update that would be great.

tar xzf 8812au-4.1.18-845.tar.gz

As I am away from home for a few weeks I do not have an 8812au wifi adapter to test the driver with, but I think it should be OK.

Did you run commands

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
./install.sh
to install the driver? You need to run command ./install.sh to install the driver correctly.

Please reboot and then post the output of commands

Code: Select all

uname -a
lsusb
lsmod

Hi

I got my Pi today and am having fun setting it up except for the same wifi issue that the other fellow had/has. When I hover my mouse pointer it says eth0 connected
but also wlan0 not associated.
Here is the output of the commands. The 3rd line down from the top seems to indicate that the wifi dongle has been installed and is being seen by the pi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The lan connection is working fine and at least that is getting me going. But I am getting tired of tripping over the not long enough (barely) cable.

Thanks in advance

Need help with following:
need the 8812au module to autoload/install at bootup. Added it to /etc/modules but get errors during boot.
Unfortunately I don't have a 8812au wifi adapter with me in Dubai to test the driver but I've no reason to think there should be an issue with it as I can get the driver to install and load without problems.

I installed the module using the exact commands I mentioned in my previous post

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
./install.sh
To check the situation using file /etc/modules, I edited the /etc/modules file adding module name 8812au and rebooted and the module loads without any problems. However, you should not need to use file /etc/modules to get the module to load if you used the commands above. It should load automatically when you have your wifi adapter connected to the Pi.

I would suggest you download and install the driver again using the commands above, including the ./install.sh command, and reboot and then see what happens.

Each driver will usually control a number of different wifi adapter based on the chip set the wifi adapter uses. The driver will also generally need to be compiled to be compatible with the kernel version you use, so if you change/update the kernel version you will need to update the driver.

I'm running an EW-7811UTC on a Pi 2 B with the 8812au driver I compile. I also have a Linksys WUSB6300 running on a Pi Zero with the same 8812au driver.

You will need to install the version of the driver compatible with the kernel version you are using as folllows.

Using my standard wifi driver naming format you can download and install the driver using commands
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-kernel-build.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-kernel-build.tar.gz
./install.sh
replacing kernel and build with the values from the command uname -a.

As an example for a Pi 2 B using raspbian 4.1.18-v7+ #845 use commands
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-4.1.18-v7-845.tar.gz
./install.sh
For the Pi Zero and Pi A/A+/B/B+ the kernel version will not have -v7 like
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8812au-4.1.18-845.tar.gz
tar xzf 8812au-4.1.18-845.tar.gz
./install.sh
Run command uname -a to find the kernel version and build your kernel version is and replace the kernel and build values in the commands above with the ones the uname -a command shows.

To configure the wifi to connect to your wireless network edit file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf like

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
	ssid="network-name"
	psk="network-password"
}
I also have a script that will automatically check if there is a wifi driver available and will install it if there is. You can download and install it using commands

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/install-wifi.tar.gz
tar xzf install-wifi.tar.gz
Use command ./install-wifi -h to see the info on how to use it.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. Unfortunately, I am rather new to the linux world. I will definitely give your suggestions a try. Your help is very much appreciated.

Update: I just wanted to update this post. In the past, I'd pretty much given up on trying to get wifi to work on my Pi2. With your help, I've been able to get this WiFi working with all of my Raspberry Pi's including my new Pi Zero. Thank you again for providing assistance and being selfless in helping others.

MrEngman,

From what I've seen in the forums, you've done quite a bit of work compiling the driver for the Edimax EW-7811UTC wireless adapter for various kernels and sharing it with others. I have not found it for 4.1.19v7-aufs armv7l GNU/Linux. The driver provided by the manufacturer seems to be written for an older kernel. I was wondering what the whole process you underwent to create these pre-compiled driver modules for other forum members. It would be great to have the module, so I could install it. But it would be better to be able to re-compile the driver every time the kernal is upgraded. I would be eternally grateful for a little how-to! Ie. give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish.

Thanks in advance!

Mr EngMan,

I just upgrade my Pi 3 to 4.4.11 and my driver for the 7811 will not load.

Where can I find the latest driver ?

Thanks.

Take a look at this post on how to determine the driver to download and install.

It also points to a script I have generated that will automatically determine if a driver is available and install it if there is.

Mr EngMan,

Do you have any suggestion why my 5GHz SSID from my ASUS RT68U(Merlin) won't show up for the 7811UTC in Openelec 6.0.3 on my RPi3?
It's strange because other 5GHz SSID's from neighbours and my chromecasts do show.
Connecting to my 2.4 GHz SSID from the same router works fine.

I am just trying a 7811UTC on a Pi 3B and it has connected to my 5GHz AP, a Netgear WAC120, without problems.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is something to do with the set up of the RT68U on 5GHz. But what I have no idea.

Solved.
I got it to work with this answer from Edimax support:
The EW-7811UTC cannot detect all frequencies. If your router is using a channel which is not supported the adapter will not detect it.

This adapter only supports channels that are within band 1 and band 2. You can try to set a fixed channel on your router, using the lower 5GHz channels.
Thank you for your effort.
I guess I didn't try/vary enough...
