Raspberry PI A Plus crashes on apt-get update

I was confused of the relevancy of cost of ZERO as well, the OP never mentioned the Zero !

I was looking at it from a wider context than "How can we help this one person".

A fix into the foundation image would have wider implications than just fixing the OP's issue. It would allow the cheapest kit to be used by anyone on any Pi without a functional Ethernet port. That may not be the best or the fastest option...but for many use cases that's not the critical factor.

As of today, an update for the Pi's USB driver dwc_otg is available via sudo rpi-update which means it doesn't crash with the current upstream DM9601 driver.

So the £3, 3-port USB2.0 hub plus USB1.1 Ethernet is usable on the Pi.

I did the whole patch and recompile kernel thing, this new image is better or the same as the double buffer patch?

In terms of the patch, it's the same - trim in both places.

Try redownloading the os see if that helps or check your internet connection

Hi & welcome to the forums Spooky. But this was a long-identified issue with the DM9601 ethernet driver & the Pi's dwc_otg driver. No amount of re-downloading & re-imaging would have fixed it, unless it was with today's rpi updates.

With the fix the kernel log does fill with trim messages, & those will only go with improvements to the upstream DM9601 driver (or if you comment out the log line in dwc_otg ), but it's at last usable.

Nay bother. I suggested another patch which stopped the kernel log spamming too.

I think it may have been taken up - I couldn't see anything in the logs I checked. I might have checked the wrong log though!
