Re: Pi Zero USB does not work at all

Sun Jan 31, 2016 4:03 pm

Hello,

I have the same exact issue. I've tried with and without a hub, with wireless mouse, wired mouse, wireless keyboard mouse combo but to no avail. I have a decent power supply (5V 2.5A) that works perfectly with my RPi 2. Is there any way to go about getting a replacement?

Thanks.

I'm also having problems with my raspberry pi zero I received yesterday. Just as you, everything's working except the usb OTG. I measured the pads, got 3.3 on D+, D- and 5V on the power. Is there a possibility to return the pi to the manufacturer, and get a replacement one?

Anyone who bought them from supplier - they are under warrantee - talk to the people you got them from.

Not sure what the deal is on ones from the Magpi.

That said, these things are generally very reliable and tested before they are sent from the factory, so might be worth trying to figure the problem before sending them back.

(Note, 500k Zero's have been sold, and the reliability rate is extremely high)

So, some troubleshooting...

Plug in the OTG adapter to the USB port (not the power port). Boot the Pi.

What does `lsusb` show?

Attach a mouse (or similar) - anything happen?

Not so easy when most are saying the USB is not working so cannot get a keyboard to work.

But as you suggest plug in an OTG adapter rather than an ordinary micro B cable, which I suspect is likely to be the problem, and then I would expect it to work.

Ahh, good point, I was thinking non-Zero.

One can check if Zero is dead by following procedure outlined in this post:

I had to bend up the pins inside the USB to get one of mine to work reliably.
By comparing the two sockets I could see that the USB one was out of alignment.

Just a tip for those having trouble finding a hub that works. I went through trying one powered and one non powered hub not working and then decided to try the one for Rockband for Nintendo Wii and it works perfectly

I had the same problem, here is what I do:

Connect to the Pi using SSH
Run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
While Pi install upgrades follow the shell, it anything not install because of your internet connection run the commands above again.
Then reboot using:

Code: Select all

reboot
Happy safe hacking

Hi,

Yes it is obvious when it's a PI ZERO W already connected to the wifi. But unfortunately, this does not solve absolutely nothing for these problems of USB port that fryed. So to cut off the discussions, PI ZERO works, except the USB port and the only way to use it is to access it via the UART (via the GPIO).

Solved.

I've often recommended a serial console cable for troubleshooting. I use CP2102 USB-TTL adapters I get from eBay for less than $2.

But for those who are having trouble now, and don't have a console cable, I'd suspect the OTG adapter before I'd blame the Pi0.

Try my Raspbian Stretch Lite USB Ethernet Gadget mode image.

Just write it you your SD card with Etcher and don't modify anything.
  • Put the card in your Pi0 or Pi0W
  • Connect a normal micro USB data cable to the USB data port of the Pi0 (the one closest to HDMI)
  • Do not connect anything to the power port (the one closest to the outer edge)
  • Connect the other end of the micro USB cable to your main PC and the Pi0 should start to boot
  • Note that the first boot can take awhile, so give it a minute or two before you try to SSH in
It will boot up in USB Ethernet Gadget mode, and you should be able to SSH into: [email protected] (or [email protected]).

If it doesn't work, check Device Manager to see what driver (if any) was installed.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?
