No sound HDMI

Sun Jul 29, 2012 9:55 pm

Hi,
I have already gone through all the troubleshooting procedures I can find. I am getting audio out the analog port but not correctly out the HDMI port. Something is going out the HDMI port because when I run a wave file it causes my Visio 32" television to reboot.

Things done so far:
Gone through the troubleshooting Wicki (How I got the analog working)
hdmi_drive=2 in config.txt
hdmi_group=1

hdmi_mode=4

No luck.
I also checked a second television and can't get audio out HDMI on it either.

BTW: HDMI audio works fine with all my other devices on these television sets.

Sounds like the tv needs configuring not the raspi. Sorry bud.

Excerpt from MagPI issue 3
try these settings and directions and see if it helps.

INSTALLING THE SOUND DRIVER MODULE
If you intend to have sound through the TV, make sure the
TV volume is up, otherwise connect a 3.5mm headphone
cable from the pi's analogue output to your speakers/stereo
equipment and switch them on.
After logging in type the following at the command prompt:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils (Answer 'Y' if asked about
disk space used)
sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835

If you want sound through the HDMI cable type:
sudo amixer cset numid=3 2
Or if you want sound through the analogue (headphone)
socket type:
sudo amixer cset numid=3 1
To make sure the sound driver module gets loaded each
time you boot up type:
sudo nano /etc/modules
At the bottom of the file (Under vchiq), add the following:
snd_bcm2835
Press Ctrl+X and then Y to save the changes.
Reboot the pi:
sudo reboot
Login and start the LXDE Graphical Interface by typing:
startx
When LXDE has loaded, Select 'Music Player' from the
Sound & Video menu
Press the play button. If all is well you should hear a 40
second piece of music called 'Cellule' by Silence.
You can use file manager to copy mp3 music from a USB
memory stick onto your home folder or play them directly
through Music Player. Note however that it won't play wma
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

The process from magpi works with the debian squeeze distribution, but only if the hdmi_drive=2 line is present in the config.txt file. If there is no config.txt file in the /boot directory just create one with the hdmi_drive=2 line in it. Worked for me.

@Snipez, I seriously doubt it. I have plugged in a half dozen other HDMI devices and never had an audio problem, not once.

@Vindicator, I'll run through these steps but I am running Wheezy.

Yeah, I am running Wheezy, but I think there are some things in here worth trying. The thing that stumps me is I know the audio signal is going out because the television will reboot when I play a wave file. It's being sent out the wrong way somehow and the television sees it as data rather than an audio signal. I suspect, with no way to prove it, that Wheezy thinks it is one hdmi mode and the television another.

I have four televisions I have tested this on:
1. 32" Visio, not working test information above.
2. 67" Samsung Plasma, works as expected.
3. 27" Visio, works but audio is delayed.
4. 15" Dynex piece O' junk, not working. I'm not even going to troubleshoot this one, it probably supports very few monitor modes. I use it as a test interface for my home network and television system.

Mine has worked fine on my 42" LG a 19" Polaroid TV and my Motorola lapdock, had a minor problem with lapdock till I used the sudo amixer cset numid=3 2 and no problems since.

Also use the 3.5mm jack when hooked to an older Dell monitor that has DVI and a built in powered hub so I use desktop speakers with it.

I have 2 Sony TVs, neither one has audio via HDMI. I installed VLC and get no sound playing MP3. Strange thing is I did get the "Center" test and the "Hello" siren to come through the HDMI cable. Not sure if it is a config issue in VLC or not. I will try the audio out to RCA to receiver later.

@Vindicator, I don't doubt it works for most televisions. It's not working with my visio 32" one for some reason. When I run Raspbmc audio does work out the HDMI port.

I can not get any sound output from my TV using an HDMI cable. I have used the hdmi_drive=2 trick, but it still doesn't seem to work.
If someone could give me any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
