Problem installing rasberry pi

Tue Nov 10, 2015 6:29 am

Hello,
I've had my Rasberry Pi B+ for some time now but haven't installed anything on it yet. Yesterday I thought I would give it a try since I need it for a Linux class. However it seems there is a bug that has been around since at least sometime 2013. Why it isn't fixed and exactly what causes the problem is, since I'm no Linux user a bit hard to understand. From what I have read the file cmdline.txt points to the wrong place.

The problem is known by the error message: kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,6)

I've tried:

Installing noobs
Installing noobs that is modified in the file os/Rasbian/boot.tar -->.\cmdline.txt The mmcblk0p2 is now mmcblk0p6
Installing rabsian via win32 diskimager
Installing rabsian via win32 diskimager with the file cmdline.txt modified.
Installing ubunto lite via win32 diskimager

Before each installation the SD-card has been formated with the SDFormatter tool.

It can't be meant to be this hard to get the Rasberry to work. And I can't see how this still is a problem with no good solution guide yet. It could be the SD-card, but since I don't own more then one that is the last thing I would like to try since I'll have to buy another one then. Could anyone explain what the problem is and how i might get my Rasberry to boot properly?

Thanks in advice!

It usually isn't hard to get Raspbian to work on the Pi. You might have a faulty SD card. You will need one of at least 8GB to install the latest software.

Go to here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup/ and follow the instructions. Download the software from there too, as it will be genuine from there.

* Make sure that you follow the instructions to reformat the SD Card
* Download and copy the NOOBS files to the SD Card (unzip them first). You should see several files when looking at the card with your PC / Mac or whatever you are using
* Put the card in the Pi, connect a HDMI TV and switch on the Pi (connect the power). It should boot up to a menu window
* Follow the instructions, and allow the Pi to reboot. You should get Rasbian

It really is his simple. Ignore any other instructions that you may have found; they might be out of date.

If this does not work, let us know how far you got. Give us the exact text of any messages you get when it fails

The card is 16 GB so that should be enough. I've tried the setup you listed. Still the same problem. NOOBS will boot and install successfully, the problem appears when it reboots after installation.

Have you tried Raspbian Jessie Standalone ?

In my experience it is usually either the SD Card or SD Card Reader which can cause issues ;)
Rather than negativity think outside the box !
RPi 4B 4GB (SSD Boot)..
Asus ChromeBox 3 Celeron is my other computer...

Yes I have tried it. Since the installation works fine I wouldn't suspect the card reader to be the problem.

This is the solution I've found that I don't really get to work eather: https://garretlabs.wordpress.com/tag/vf ... block-179/

Have you checked the SDCard isn't fake or toasted?

Did you do a full format, or a quick format?
Do a full format, not a quick format!
Did you use the one other option, ("do resize" or something like it).
Format with both these options on!
Also fill the namefield with something sensible, like "noobs".
then try again.
Or try a different SD-Card.

That is also tried. Went to the store and got myself a new card, 8 GB instead. Seems to work fine now with NOOBS although installing Ubuntu Mate with WIn32 gives me another error now. The old card seems to work fine with storage but for some reason isn't working with my Rasberry. However, if this happens just buy a new card and be happy, there not expensive at all (which was what I remembered it being but then again that was some years ago).

Thanks for all the help!

Cheers,

download h2testw
run it on your PC with the formatted bad SDcard and see what it says
