I lost my sound

Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:32 pm

It happened yesterday for no apparent reason right in the middle of a movie.
The connecting cable is HDMI and the picture is still good.
I tried a new cable but no love.
Any suggestions as to how to figure this out ?
Thanks

My sound went out a couple of times and I had to reset the raspi-config sound settings.
Backspace 28 times :)

I tried the reset and that didnt help.
I also noticed that in the upper right corner of the screen is a red circle with a speaker in it and the speaker has a slash / through it.

Additionally, what kind of cable is used in the PI2 in the audio out jack? It says composite but I always thought that there should be at least 2. 1 for video and 1 for sound.

I am going to try the composite audio port after the correct cable ( I hope ), gets here.

Now, another question. If somehow the HDMI audio on the board is faulty, would the composite audio be affected also ?

Additionally, is there anything that I can do from the command prompt to test the audio components ?

CLI default output will be automatic (hdmi if hdmi supports audio, otherwise analogue). You can force it with:

Code: Select all

sudo amixer -c 0 cset numid=3 <n>
where n is 0=auto, 1=headphones, 2=hdmi

Test with

Code: Select all

sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav

sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav

That means you have 'muting' turned on. Turn it off.

Thank you Douglas but I wish it were as simple as that. The TV works fine but when I switch to Kodi on the RP2 is when the "no speaker symbol" appears. Additionally if I press the mute button on the TV controller I get a message about " your system is configured to use external speakers", which it is.
I am starting to think that the sound chip/circuit on the RP2 has been fried.

Of course the warranty has expired. I bought it in May 2015.

Nice try though.

The muting is done by Kodi, and needs to be turned off there. If the remote 'mute' button doesn't work, you'll need to plug in a keyboard and hit F8.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Douglas.
That worked and my wife says that she wants to have your children.

Curious as to how it could happen in the middle of a movie.
