Content being rendered behind console

I've just set up a brand new rpi2 with noobs and so far I've installed openframeworks and mpd.
Something weird is happening: Content rendered with OpenGLES (or egl_render? - not sure of the difference) is being rendered behind the command line console.
Here's an example - you can see the application running in the overscan borders.
I've also tried it with the hello teapot demo (/opt/vc/src/hello_pi/hello_teapot). Same problem.
Has anyone encountered this before? Any idea of the cause?
