Reboot fails w/ Gembird SilverShield USB power strip attache

Tue Jul 17, 2012 5:12 pm

Hello,
I plan to use my raspy to control a Gembird SilverShield USB attached power strip. It allows to turn on/off 4 seperate power outlets via USB control. The Linux application sispmctl works well so far on my HP PC w/ SuSE 11.4. Also it works on RPi. But when the RPi reboots, it frequently hangs when coming up again. The error messages on the console are hardly readable as they get spilled out way to fast to read. Only way to get it running again is power off/ power on. Cold boots seem to work reliable though.
I have ried to attached the Gembird via a powered USB hub too, to exclude power comsumption issues, but symptoms stay the same.
Q: Is this known? I have seen another post where the Gembird power strip was proposed.
Q: I can't find a logfile with the error messages after cold start, nothing in messages or dmesg.*. Any idea?

I have 5 Gembird Silvershield's, now connected to a Mac Mini. I have some AppleScript-stuff, bought from the internet, running to be able to control the powerstrips from within my home-made shell-scripts. The Apple-Script interface-software however contains some shortcomings/bugs and is never being updated. Email to the supplier results in no replies at all... Therefore it would be great to be able to control them through the Pi.
Some time next week I will try to find the sispmctl-software you mentioned and will try to do some testing with it on my Pi. Will keep you updated...

Alas, same problems as mentioned on top. Hangs during boot, hangs while trying to access the Gembird ports. Somebody, HELP please!

I'm facing the same problem as well, it simply hangs after one or two commands. And I'm connecting it to a high speed USB hub which powered separately. Anyone could find a solution?

What kernel are you using? uname -a should show you that.
What is lsusb telling you about the power strip when it's connected?

uname -a gives:
Linux blackberrypi 3.6.11+ #371 PREEMPT Thu Feb 7 16:31:35 GMT 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux

lsusb gives the correct info but when accessing the device (either directly or though a US 1.0/2.0/3.0 hub) the system is hung after just a few attempts.

it works fine when using the latest kernel! I'm happy!
