The best thing is to run "headless": no keyboard, mouse or monitor. Instead use another computer to connect remotely. There are several good tutorials around for remote connect. To start with just the command line, load the Debian Wheezy beta which has SSH enabled and then use a SSH program (on windows use Putty). Here are some links:
(Remember with Wheezy you do not have to follow any steps to enable SSH. It is there by default. This is not true with the Squeeze release. It has to be turned on locally which requires a keyboard).
Once you get the command line working then use a VNC program to get the graphic screen.
