Unload smsc95xx

Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:36 pm

Hello,

I have some trouble with the smsc95xx when I'm using a 3G modem on USB.
Because I don't need ethernet I thought best way would be to deactivate this module. But it is impossible to unload it with
  • modprobe -r smsc95xx
Therefore my question is:
Is it possible to deactivate the kernelmodul smsc95xx without recompiling the kernel?

Best regards

You can try this to disable it:

Code: Select all

echo 1-1.1:1.0 > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/smsc95xx/unbind
and to enable it back:

Code: Select all

echo 1-1.1:1.0 > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/smsc95xx/bind

Hello secretagent,

thanks for your help. I think there is a bug in the smsc95xx modul in Debian.
With Raspbian I have no more problems.

I'm looking forward to a bugfree debian. But until that happens I will use Raspbian.

Best regards

Isn't that the module that drives the SD card? If so removing it is likely to cause severe problems.

No, it's the network driver.

I'm getting an error message when running the unbind command:

Code: Select all

-bash: /sys/bus/usb/drivers/smsc95xx/unbind: Permission denied
I tried running it with sudo and without with the same result. Any tips?

Thanks!

Either:

Code: Select all

sudo su
echo 1-1.1:1.0 > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/smsc95xx/unbind
or

Code: Select all

sudo sh -c 'echo 1-1.1:1.0 > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/smsc95xx/unbind'
