Samba/VNCServer Troubleshooting

Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:16 am

Hey everyone,

First time poster and pretty much a noob at pi's and linux. I'm using my Pi B+ as a media server running Kodi and it works great. I am having problems getting the samba share and the VNC server running though. I'll start with Samba first;

I found a website that had a walk through of how to get samba running. I followed it and got it up and running. I even did a few file transfers to the pi's ext usb with no problems. The walk through neglected to add the step about auto mounting the shared drive after reboot however, and low and behold, after a reboot it stopped working. Like an idiot I didn't bookmark the site so I ended up finding this site ; http://www.simonthepiman.com/how_to_set ... server.php . I had the samba share running through windows explorer, transferred a few files and so on. It even worked after a reboot. Problem now is, that I can't access the external hard drive under the devices folder anymore. I can access the pi, pi home and usb folders though. When I do try to access the folder it just states that "Windows cannot access \\RASPBMC\devices" and gives me the diagnose or cancel option. It does this on any windows 7 machineI try on ( which is 3 laptops). I can post any config or log files that you would need to help me troubleshoot, just let me know which ones you need and how to get to them.

And then onto VNC Server... I followed the guide from four separate websites, which all were the same steps, to no avail. When I fire up Ultra VNC from my laptop it just states that it can't connect to the server. Again if you need any logs or files posted let me know and I'll get them on the post.

Thanks for your help and I appreciate anyone willing to help.

Tony

VNC: which vnc server did you install? How did you install it? How did you start it, once installed?

We could also do with more info about your system: which distro (Raspbmc?), version, what sort of drive are you connecting and how, file system of drive, etc...
