pi2 rainbow screen

Thu Feb 19, 2015 2:37 am

Hey Guys,

I have a pi2 and can not get past the rainbow screen. I followed the instructions in the noobs config (which finally led me here). Formatted the sd card using sdformatter with overwrite and have tried copying the following noob versions
noobs 1.3.12
noobs 1.4.0

I also tried the following images:
snappy ubuntu
new raspbian

I made the images using dd on a mac. As well as trying out Pifiller, just in case.

Plugging the cards (with noobs) into a first gen pi work fine. Oh and I've tried the following cards
samsung 16 evo class 10 (tried two different ones)
pny 8gb class 4

I've gone through the sticky topics for troubleshooting and pitfalls. Attached is a directory listing of the card, it's got the kernel7.img

My question is: Should I keep trying new cards or should I start to suspect my pi is a dud?

Ditto here, ...I think the system images aren't ready for this new board?

Sounds pretty exhaustive. How is the power supply. The Pi2 is a little more power hungry. Do you get a solid red light on the Pi2?

Yeah, the red and green lights both come on and stay on (no blinking). From what I've read it sounds like it is behaving as if I had an unreadable card?

I've tried a few power supplies:
apple wall charger 5v 1a
kindle wall charger 5v ~.8a
a new iPad charger, I believe it's 2a

They all produce the same behavior.

Yes, the genuine iPad chargers are good in my experience.

The only thing so far that boots for me is http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ raspbian debian wheezy 2015-02-16, otherwise I get the "rainbow screen of waiting"

So what is the process for exchanging one of these things? I suppose I just need to call the site I bought it from? Is it worth trying another card? I think I've spent more on cards now than I did the pi:)

The only other thing I can suggest is if you know someone with a Raspberry Pi, could you try there card?

Someone in another thread (http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 20#p698722) found that deleting the recover7.img file got their Pi to boot. Perhaps there is something up with that file, I don't know and I haven't heard anything official about it.
Could you try deleting or renaming that file and seeing if you can get your Pi to start in that state? It might work, it might not.

The recovery7.img file is the Pi2 version of the NOOBS software. If it isn't there the Pi will use recovery.img instead, which is the Pi 1 version. It should still work but might be slightly slower. I don't know if it's just built for the newer CPU or if it has other changes in as well.

@Whayle
If a RPi boots with one OS then there is no hardware fault with the RPi and no point in seeking a replacement.

If you put other OS (which is recent enough to work on RPi) on that same card does it work?

How about the USB lead from the power supply to the Pi ?. At least as important as the power supply. Using the same lead on different supplies means precisely zero if the lead is no good.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

1. I've had no operating system work yet on the pi2. All of the cards, when loaded with an os that will run on either, seem to work on a pi1.

2. So, I did use two different USB cables, one that came with my kindle and another from a camera we have, both were similar in length and thickness, so perhaps that's the best next thing to try. Is there a power supply and cable that is recommended (link to amazon or something?)

While I'm ordering things, I suppose I'll try one more card as well. If anyone has a recommendation, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I read the same thing and tried it with the same results. I think I'll try getting a more robust power supply designed for the pi and a pi card as well.

I tried that one yesterday, but only with one of the cards. Thanks for the tip.

So, I bought a new power supply that outputs 5v at 2A. I'm using the micro USB cable that came with my kindle. I don't have a multimeter, but when I use a different cable it reboots over and over, with the kindle it just stays on the rainbow screen. The behavior continues to be:

1. plug pi in with NOOBS 1.4.0 on the sd card (which does have kernel7.img and does boot in a piB)
2. red and green leds light up
3. rainbow screen displays
4. red and green continuously are lit up, no blinking

Just for kicks I tried adding boot_delay=1 to the config.txt with the same results. My next step it to try a new card, it sounds like sandisk is the way to go?

Well last ditch effort. Bought a sandisk card reported to work with the pi2. Same thing...

Sounds like it is time to return the Raspberry Pi and get a replacement.
