Not booting...

Wed Feb 18, 2015 2:42 pm

I got my Pi 2 the other day and bought a brand new (albeit cheap) micro SD card. I have used the instructions to try Raspbian, Ubuntu Snappy, Noobs, and Noobs lite (using SDFormatter, dd, and Win32DiskImager on different OS's). Still not booting. I read the info about how units are rarely bad and it is usually the card, but I don't know with this unit. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I could try a new card I guess. I don't really want to spend more cash on a card if it is not the problem. I can read the card just fine on a Mac and Windows VM.

Thanks,

As a follow-up, I did manage to get a tester MicroSD card to try again. A good one this time and still no boot. I think I have a lemon.

Thanks for the replies. The read and green lights both stay lit...no blinking at all.

Thanks, Dirk. Stopped by there. In the process of doing the overwrite formaton the SD card. It seems a long process. Will post the results either way.

Ok, it is not a lemon. The first 2 cards I tried simply did not work (128GB and 64GB). I found another 8GB card and it fires up just fine. So, thank you for the help. Guess I will just have to find the right card that will work and still offer a little storage space.

The 64GB and 128GB cards are probably OK, but by default they will be formatted with the exFAT filesystem layout which the Pi cannot boot from. The Pi must have FAT32 filesystem for the boot partition. Cards under 64GB usually use FAT32.

There is a special FAT32 formatter available which will format larger cards to FAT32 instead of exFAT.
