SD Copy Fails While Cloning SD to SSD

Tue Jul 27, 2021 8:35 pm

When trying to clone my RP4-8GB SD card to an SSD I keep getting "Drives changed - copy aborted" and the system hangs and has to be power-cycled.

Any ideas?

(I tried using rsync and that also hung my system!)

+1 and/or maybe, assuming a USB-to-SATA SSD adapter is in use, one with an unsuitable (for linux) chipset.
@pettefar, can you post the outputs of

Code: Select all

lsusb
and

Code: Select all

lsusb -t
(within code tags, as above)
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P3B+, P4B's & P400. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

I wrote a new image on it using the Raspberry Pi Imager on my Mac and when I booted it up it said "Resizing disk" and then the screen blanked and nothing more happened apart from the drive's activity light flashing. I guess this drive (Sabrent) will never work.

Unfortunately (some) JMicron chipsets do not play well with Linux (although applying a quirk** may help, but reduce transfer rates).

Can anyone recommend a currently available SSD drive that is reasonably priced?

Kingston A400 SSDs, just about as cheap as they get, speed is just about as fast as anything can be on a Pi, ultra-reliable, very low power (I drive two off one Pi4). I have around eight of them, four run 24/7 with a lot more than average throughput, two were low-usage second-hand.

If you are looking for USB3-sata adapter I recommend Ugreen. There are possibly cheaper adapters but Ugreen always have the Asmedia chipset and not Jmicron.

OK, thanks very much for the recommendations. I'll see how I fare with them.

Well, I finally got it working with the recommended hardware.

I tried the SD card cloning from the source Raspberry pi 4 8GB but it kept rebooting the Pi around the 9/10 copy partition 2 leg. After five attempts I gave up and installed a clean copy of Raspberry Pi OS image on it and copied the relevant details over from the original SD card.

I'll see if I can use the Sabrent as a backup device.
