USB bus died?

Dear PI community.

I received a week ago my new Raspberry PI 4 and I started to play with it.

Due to I don't have mini-hdmi adapter I installled Raspbian following headless guide without troubles, I am able to connect it via ssh and there's no problem.

I have long experience with Raspberries, I started from RPi 1 and I' m prodly owner of RPi2, RPi Zero, 3, etc... I explain this because I have some habits as install system in a pendrive (finally I was ready to use full speed USB 3.0!!). I did that with some troubles but finally I get.
My next step was install Nextcloud and connect a powered USB hub 3.0 with two USB 1Tb disks. This is what I have installed in a RPi 3 so I didn't expect any trouble. But...

When I connected USB hub, RPi shutdowns itself. No leds, ping lost. Ok, reboot. But it doesn't boot.

I finally installed deployed another SD card and tested. It boots!!! But... this is what I get when I launch lsusb:

NOTHING.

lspci

NOTHING.

Of course, if I plug an usb device (usb disk, usb mouse...) nothing happens. No new lines in /var/log/messages, nothing in dmesg...

I tested several sd cards, different raspbian releases... same behaviour. It looks like USB ports have died.

And here my question. How can I test it? There's any way to confirm this theory?

1. Unplug everything including power, don't disconnect the HDMI to your monitor/TV
2. Write a new SDCard with plain Raspbian 2020-02-13
3. Create a /boot/ssh file in the first primary partition (the one Windows can see that's 256MB in size)
4. Create a wpa_supplicant.conf with your country code, SSID and password in /boot/wpa_supplicant.conf (also on the first primary partition)
5. Try booting that - it should connect to your WiFi and enable ssh (even though the pi userid has a weak password)
6. ssh in and change the password for user pi to a stronger known value
7. shutdown so that everything is safe on the SDcard (and you won't have to re-run steps 1 to 6)
8. Insert the keyboard
9. Power up again
10. ssh in and see what's in dmesg and /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log from the boot up at step 9
11. If it works run sudo apt update; sudo apt dist-upgrade -y (to catch up with a bucket load of changes since February)
12. Reboot again

Then report back what you've found. If nothing works after step 10 you may need to RMA your RPi to your vendor for replacement.
Note: Any requirement to use a crystal ball or mind reading will result in me ignoring your question.

Thanks Dougie for your quick answer.

I follow your guide but I get same results. I' ve also tested with 64 bit kernel and default one... same result.

I can see the kernel loading some USB drivers but I can't see any USB device getting enumerated.

Does anything change if you switch back to the Pi4 V7L kernel from the 64-bit one?
Note: Any requirement to use a crystal ball or mind reading will result in me ignoring your question.

Then I think your hardware is broken. If you're sure it's nothing you've done to break it contact your vendor for an RMA.

Ok, I did RMA and I get a new device right now.

Should I take any consideration to connect a powered USB hub? Is there any limitation for these devices?
