Upgrading from Rasp1 to Rasp3B+

Fri Jan 11, 2019 11:52 am

We have a project that uses the Raspberry 1 with Raspbian (7) Wheezy on the sd card.
Since they don't sell Raspberry 1s no more we switched to the 3B+. Swapping the sd card to the new Raspberry obviously didn't boot but after copying the boot partition from a more recent Raspbian to the sd card, a little bit of tweaking we were able to boot the old Raspbian in the 3B+! Yay!
Problem: No ethernet or wifi.

Probably driver problems right? With no access to the Internet to run apt-get dist-upgrade (and hoping for the best) what are our remaining options?

Before you suggest, no, it's no viable to just install the recent Raspbian and copy the project to there. The project involves a lot of "messing" in a lot of system files and this "messing" is not documented anywhere and the guy who did the project already left. We tried that approach first but without success.

The Pi B+ and Pi A+ are still available from both RS and Farnell. They should work fine with your current SD card. They are also still being manufactured.

The altnerative is, unfortunately, exactly what you don't want to do which is start afresh. Next time, make sure your projects are documented!

Another option would be to ignore the onboard ethernet and wifi and use additional USB dongles.

Otherwise find someone who can look through a copy of your SD card to see which files have been changed and why, update it to work under Stretch, and to document it for future reference.

Boot a copy of Raspbian Stretch on your 3B+.

Mount the historic, museum piece SDCard in a USB reader. Insert the reader in your 3B+.

sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
sudo mount -t proc /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys
cd /mnt
sudo chroot .
# Yes there is a full stop there.
## Do stuff to update the chrooted filesystem
exit
cd
sudo umount /mnt/sys
sudo umount /mnt/dev
sudo umount /mnt/proc
sudo umount /mnt/boot
sudo umount
sudo poweroff

Swap the card over and boot normally.
