RPi3 Problem with WiFi

Sat Nov 11, 2017 6:56 pm

Hello - I'm having problems getting wifi running on my RPi3. I've tried the defaul guil, manual configuation, wicd-curses, wicd-gtk and wifi-radar all to no avail. I can access the RPi3 via eth0 but only once has wifi come up and I cannot replicate that. Wifi sees my access point but fails to connect.

Below are my /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/wpa_supplicat/wpa_supplicant.conf files:

Code: Select all

source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d

auto lo
iface lo
inet loopback

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
        wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

country=US
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="***********"
        psk="***************"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}
My RPi3 is running the 7 Sep 2017 version of Rasbian Stretch. My access point is a Linksys 1900AC using Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r28788 std (01/13/16). I have two other RPi2's with wifi dongles up and running OK. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are using Stretch, remove all this from /etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo
inet loopback

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
        wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
This should be the only uncommented line.

Code: Select all

source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d

OK - I did that and rebooted but no change.

You said you tried with your GUI network icon. Does it connect to the AP? If it does, it should put the correct ssid and psk in the wpa_supplicant.conf file.

The psk is at least 8 characters, correct?

No it does not connect or better said it did not connect. I had to run an errand for the past 1+30 and now when I checked it is connected. I have no idea what happened. It even picked up the reserved dhcp address. I'm baffled and afraid to reboot in case I end up again at square one.

Well that was short lived. Today I'm right back to where I started. WiFi interface lost its IP and so I rebooted hoping that would reset the IP. But no such luck. Hovering over the network icon on the task bar shows wlan0 not associated. All the correct details are in the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file. I will watch it awhile and see if it comes up on its own.

I am at a loss. WiFi for the RPi3 is hit or miss it seems. Mostly misses for me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that I have fixed the issue with my RPi3 WiFi. The following seems to have fixed the issue:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get rpi-upgrade
apt-get rpi-update
reboot
branch=next rpi-update
reboot

You got lucky. The BRANCH=next stuff is was stale, but you mucked up the command.

DO NOT run rpi-update if you don't understand what it does, how it does it, how you revert to a good kernel & bootcode and you have a current working/tested backup of your SDcard.

rpi-update installs the very latest, very much experimental kernel & bootcode and it can leave your RPi so it won't boot (that has happened with more than one of my 15 raspberries).

Sneaky, that's even more reason not to use it since the 4.14 kernel is less than a week old.
