Servo's and the raspberry pi

I am looking to build a robot with my Raspberry Pi but I am not sure how many servos the Raspberry Pi can control. I need a hardware that can control up to 5 servos and I can program it to allow my robot to do certain things. Is it possible to use a raspberry Pi to control servos instead of a normal servo controller? If not can you recommend a servo controller for me. Thank you. :D

You can use the Pi to output servo pulses on any of the user gpios (21 gpios are available on the latest boards http://elinux.org/Rpi_Low-level_peripherals).
