CPC are here to answer questions :)

Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:58 am

[Mod edit to change title at OP's request]

Hi All

Just to let you know what we're here now to answer any questions you might have about ordering from CPC :)

One of the most frequent questions we've had so far is about shipping to other countries, and we do indeed ship out to a lot of countries. If you've got any questions about that then you can email our Export Department internationalsales@cpc.co.uk and they'll guide you through the process :)

If you've got any other questions then please feel free to shout up here, or you can find us on Facebook and Twitter at the places listed in our signature!

Ok. Think that's it for now - Nice to meet you all :)

I like the point-and-click accessories picture for the PI.

I'd like to see a link for a GPIO cable and the gertboard/other appropriate kits for people to use.

I'm probably one of many people who want to try, but are new to electronics or it's been too long since they last did any to remember and don't really know where to start interfacing.

One big question for you.

In the spirit of altruism that pervades this forum, is there any chance you could offer to help RS out with their order backlog for individuals?

It seems much simpler for RS to get several thousand Raspberry Pis from you than for all their disappointed customers to cancel with RS and then inundate you with individual orders...

Hello, good to see that the range of outlets for the Pi is expanding - thanks for supporting it.

A current banner on your website states that you are expecting your next shipment to arrive today, 31st August - is that still true to the best of your knowledge? (I have a vested interest in asking this question, as I placed an order for one with you a couple of days ago).

Hey Piglet - We've passed that on to the Product Manager, hopefully they will come back with something useful :)

Hi Sirius - Yes, don't worry it arrived and orders have been processed, you should get it soon! :)

Nice one! Thanks. I'm still trying to work out how to drive my flux capacitors with the pi.

Lets face it Farnell/CPC have got RS beat hands down

1. On actual delivery times

and

2. On humour

Both of which are essential if your going to be the No1 RaspberryPi distributor :)

I had a little play around on the on-site accessory guide mentioned above - very nice - respect to your webmeister (or webmistress, possibly).

I followed the link to keyboards (cat no. CS17229) and I couldn't find any explicit statement as to which international key set those keyboards have - British? Or USA? In other words, what's above the '3' on the '3' key? A pound sign? Or a 'hash'? (Could you please add this information to the item description on the website?)

I saved the very small image from the web page and zoomed into it with an image editor, and can just make out that the keyboard illustrated has a USA key set. But then, the item page also states that the image is for illustration purposes only - so I'd still appreciate it if you can come up with the definitive answer.

Offtopic but why does CPC insist on individually bagging damn near everything. For example I ordered some surface mount transistors, other suppliers i've used who sell surface mount transistors individually would cut the right length off the reel, put it in ONE bag and send it.

CPC on the other hand cut the tape up into individual peices and then individually bagged each peice. This is both highly wasteful and makes the parts very invonviniant to store and work with. I've also seen 100NF throughole ceramic caps individually bagged

Whats with the wasteful and annoying packaging practices?!

@cpc.co.uk - I think someone should get on here tout-suite and let us know what is actually happening.

Yup, here now - Better late than never...

It does look as though we've run out of stock, there was yesterday but without checking (which I can't as I'm at home) I've got no further details as to how we've sold out so quickly.

There is another delivery due next week.

If I can find out any more information then I'll post back ASAP.

It's believed to be early next week, as soon as we know more which will likely be Monday morning we'll shout up :)

The Forum response is certainly appreciated, but I think that if you read some of the threads here you'll quickly discover why selling out your stock practically immediately shouldn't have been a surprise...

The 'availability' banner on the CPC homepage seems to take a bit of time to catch up with the actual state of affairs - for example, the banner was saying 'next delivery expected August 31st' for quite some time after the delivery had arrived. The banner is now (Saturday night) saying 'available now from CPC' when in fact, if you go to order one (I added one to my basket as an experiment) you are told, no doubt correctly, that CPC are awaiting stock once more.

What's obviously happened is that the units in the Friday 31st delivery had been entirely pre-ordered before they even arrived - one by me, hopefully - I'll just have to wait and see if the friday delivery included mine, or whether that whole delivery had already been sold out even before I pre-ordered one.

Simplesi, I can appreciate that your friend is as annoyed as anyone else who can't get their hands on a Pi, but there are a couple of differences here: One is that CPC do at least seem to be receiving regular stocks, and the other is that they have a representative who seems prepared to come here to answer any questions which are couched in reasonable terms, which is a great improvement over the 'write-only' customer service offered by one of their major rivals.

Its really great that someone comes along and tells us things :)

If the information becomes incorrect a few hours after posting it, I'd argue that its a moot point as to whether the communication is positive or not.

As a previous advocate of CPCs customer service, I just felt for a teacher mate who waited till pay day and then went into the store to get some RPi for starting back at school next week and couldn't buy any.

I don't blame companies for not having enough stock, I expect to have to wait if there is no stock, I don't blame them if demand outstrips supply - I just don't think timely information is too difficult to do when you've got computers and stock control systems and access to them and the Internet to communicate the results out to.

At 9:38 Sunday, their website front page says they are "Now available" - does that meet anyone's idea of what "available" means?

Sorry, didn't see this yesterday but we shall get that looked in to tomorrow morning (Monday) for you :)

Perhaps we did under estimate demand a little but we had hundreds in stock with no reason to believe that they would sell out so quickly. Obviously there is a lesson to be learned from this and we'll be monitoring it more closely in the future :)

Yes, unfortunately the web site refreshes content over night which is why there is a delay on that.

No, we did use some of the stock to fulfill back orders but as I said above we still had some spare, quite a lot. If you placed an order before Friday then you should be OK :)

The only thing that can be said to that is "Sorry" - We'll take a look at what happened here and see what we can do better the next time to communicate more effectively.

Of course not, I agree - but the Pi may (or may not) be the single fastest selling item that CPC have ever experienced - for any 'normal' item it probably would be OK for the status of any banner associated with that item to be updated once a day as a background or maintenance task, but in the specific case of the Raspberry Pi there appears to be a good case for having a 'live' link between the stock system and the banner so that it always reflects the actual stock levels or expected next delivery date in real time. Additional 'live' stock level information would also be welcome, ie,

When the item is in stock:

'x' available to order now' (where 'x' is the number of unallocated units in stock)

When the item is awaiting delivery:

'Delivery of 'x' expected on (date), of which 'y' units are allocated. 'z' units are available to order'.

I presume that's technically possible if CPC choose to spend the I.T. time and money necessary to do it, but if not, we will just have to get used to the availability banner being a day behind actual events.
