Marmalade - Raspberry Pi OS Preview

Mon Mar 04, 2013 6:09 pm

Greetings,

Just posting up 1 month of work on new OS for for Arm arch.Ever since me and my friends got hold of this great piece of hardware we were thrilled for it's possibilities. But quite disappointed at non responsive UI and dry apps we decided to simplify it a bit (and then it's bytes).

Work is still in beta stage and current demo is meant to showcase the potential of ARM chip. The current desktop manager feature very minimalistic set up.It has control panel to list basic hardware info and bash shell.Interface binding is mainly driven by python at the moment with Qt and OpenGL ES.We also managed to run animated OpenGL ES desktop.Although it sucks up juice of SoC but it seems fun to show it for a while.

And one more thing....

It feature an amazingly cool interface to access GPIO. We have name it 'Yoke'. The screenshots attached below are prototyped in image editor to closely resemble the real one.We don't have anything running to capture it live in current desktop manager. You can see it in action in video below:

I'll be posting up updates soon in forum. We are currently tangled in application compatibility layer. Please let us know your thoughts on project and would like to help us out in problems.

That's looking pretty cool! So its a base Linux with a new desktop based on QT and OGLES? That's a lot of work - nice job.

It was windows x that took so much of time not Qt threading. We decide to base it off Linux because if we accidentally got stuck at some point where we can't build fully OS (may be due to drivers or some kernel issues in future) then we will at-least port up our applications with really great interface for people (plan B?).

I like the colourful rendition. The effect of mouse movement across the pond is fascinating. For me it cries out for sound accompaniment. Hopefully you'll provide such, perhaps with some configurable options!

Thanks for looking at project. The download of alpha code is planned around June/July.If whole substrate OS is not stable by the end of June then I plan to release applications as standalone.Meanwhile we are focusing on real great and useful applications with some nice and friendly UI.

Thanks for your comment.I and my friends intend to launch an OS with some great utility features packed right in it from first day. It's going to come with lot of unique options. We are working on some camera and radio(and from 'radio' I mean 1 quid radio not the internet one) applications at the moment.Meanwhile all hand hoay!

Yes, I am still working on it.Some of the things are going to be aligned towards Ubuntu One and hence the wait.

The pinout in your screenshot has two SDA pins ;)

Looks very pretty, but it seems all "new UI system" projects have the problem of only very few applications being written for them :| One of those classic catch-22 scenarios.

Looks nice! But, a bit to complicated for the Pi.
I'm happy to help.

This looks good, and it's good to hear that it's still being worked on!

I'm not familiar with Ubuntu One - what's going to be aligned with it?

I'm just idly curious - what looks too complicated?
