Re: Chip's Challenge (Windows 3.1)

Sun Apr 22, 2012 4:36 am

First of all.  I find myself *hilarious*

Yes, that's right using dosbox and this guide and some windows 3.1 disks that I… *ahem* obtained I put Windows 3.1 on my Raspberry Pi all for the sake of playing this game

Here's a link to the youtube vid of me playing it

The screens a little jumpy because to get the sound coming out right I had to enable some frameskip in dosbox.  I just wanted you to hear that lovely background music it came with.  I'll probably turn it off in the long run.

Oh, and it also comes with freecell (whee)

I knew there was some reason I didn't toss that envelope of Win 3.1 install diskettes I found last month.

No - you *can't* disable the sound. Otherwise, you can't hear "Bummer..." when Chip dies. For me, that was always the best part of the game.

Oh I'm just talking about disabling the background music, not the sound effects

Thats gotta be one of the most awesome things I've seen in a while.

Well done sir, think I'll have a crack at that Win 3.11 once I find my disks.

This is high sacrilege.

A meeting of The Council will be called.

I love it!

Windows works just fine on a raspberry pi

Even if that's windows 3.1 running on an emulated CPU

Well... windows works acceptably on the R-pi, I have no networking, no video playback  and it's 16 bit OS released in 1992ish (20 years old), and even then I had to enable some frame skip to get it to run as smoothly as I expected it to

Move to windows 3.11. A little bit better network support (well easier) Good luck find virtual network driver for DOSbox though.

You have been really bad, putting windows on a RasPi. You should send it too me as penitence for your sin.

WIN95 next?

You should be working backwards - want a set of Windows 2 or even Windows 1 disk images?  Both work fine in MS VPC...

No windows 95, it won't work under dosbox I can attest that even 3.1 was pushing it a bit

Win95a, Win95b? lol. Yeah I did not think it would support Win95.

Win 95a really did not support networks well at all anyway.

Will have to see if I can find some DOS disks and the Mechwarrior2 disks.

Disks are typically not the problem. I have not so much as seen a floppy disk drive in the last 5 years - or more.

Chuck Sommerville the creator of Chip"s Challenge is making a spiritual sequel of the game and it should be out in a couple of months called Chuck"s Challenge 3D.

here is a link to some game footage from the beta

There is also a video of Chuck Sommerville explaining why Chip"s challenge 2 was never released here.

feature=related

You can help fund Chuck"s Challenge 3D on Kickstarter, only 3 days left.

Having spent six weeks trying to get Win 3.1 to connect to my companies network in the US when we set up our new office in Singapore in the mid 90's (yes I know Win 95 was available!) I happen to know that there are about 6 serious bugs in the Win 3.1 networking software that comes on the install disks. In particular the TCP/IP stack has to be updated. So if you install from disks and your networking or internet connection doesn't work, this is probably why. Unfortunately I cant remember which files you have to change and I doubt Microsoft has the info on its knowledge base any more. Good luck!

qemu can be used to run window 95/98 (and any other x86 emu you want).  We have it running on the pandora (omap arm) with pretty good results
