Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 robotics board

Thu Jun 24, 2021 3:18 pm

I don't have one of these, but it looks neat for those who want to do a spot of robotics: Cytron Maker Pi RP2040

It seems to provide
  • 2 DC motor controls
  • a few servo outputs
  • DC power management
  • LiPo/Li-Ion power and charging
  • the usual Cytron signature bits of (slightly) improved GPIO robustness, LED GPIO monitoring, lots of Grove breakouts, built-in speaker and RGB LED and being very, very purple.
They might have a robot chassis for it, too. If they do, I'm sure I know what colour it'll be …

Unlike their other Pico accessory boards, this has an RP2040 onboard. It also doesn't have a header for an ESP-01 wifi module, but I'm not sure where they'd find space to put one.

well, pihut cytron is
coming soon
. Cytron maker pi is limited to 36 items at their shop...
That is a pity (if I has to make such a card, with only LEDs, Groove and RP2040 card (I.E without motor drivers....), it would be more than 10$ ... without purple color and nice connector description an the right side, with a readable wite color)

Can't find a schematic anywhere!

From the white serigraphy on purple PCB, parts of scematics can be deduced (do RPi4 have a full schematics).
Tons of LEDs are driven by FETs? to illuminate each GPIO level.
Remains (on photo, I cannot see) the engine interface.
connectors (usb plug, RP2040 support) are surface mounted, not throgh hole (maybe they have a shorter life expectancy?)

With decent instruction you don't need schematics, and it keeps people from copying the board and putting them out of business.

Copying isn't my intent. Most of it is trivial. My only question, not addressed in current material, is about the battery support. Do they run the Pico directly off the 1 cell battery 3.7V, or is there a buck DC to DC boost/regulator in the path?

it seems to have a full LiPo charging circuit, and there are what look very like the inductors needed for a DC-DC converter on the board.

Ask Cytron? They are a friendly bunch.

Why didn't I think of that?

Will find out soon enough, two arriving tomorrow from Singapore...

Indeed they are. Schematics were sent within 24 hours upon request. It has the power implementation I was hoping for. Built-in Lipo charging. Auto selection of power sourced from either USB, 5V, or Lipo. Selected source driving a buck converter to generate constant 3.3V. Well done! An ideal little board for robotics applications.
