Workspace switcher

Mon Jun 14, 2021 12:32 am

I just tried to add a workspace switcher to the panel. Then i suddenly noticed that i couldn't maximize/minimize/drag or click off. i removed it from the panel and rebooted. Ok it was removed but i still can't do any of the above... Could somebody please tell me where i went wrong? ANY help would be much appreciated...

Yes that worked. Thank you. On a different note is there anything i need to be aware of when adding the Desktop pager?

add the desktop pager, then right click it on the panel, set the number of desktops & close.

that should be all it takes, the last time i used it. there's a manual way to increase desktops by editing a file.

lxde & openbox settings are not compatible with raspberry os. only use the appearance in preferences, it wasn't built to really tweak unless you know what your doing.

If I install for example a Mate desktop (my preferred version from my Linux laptop) then I wouldn't have this problem? Me thinks, this can be changed...

If you install an alternative desktop, there's a fair chance that the regular raspberrypi-uimods (or some similar name) updates will revert it.

i use a custom sway install on my rpi400, it's tweaked so i can use the mouse more instead of it being more keyboard oriented. i like to lean back in my chair. :D

OK, how do I avoid a change in desktop being thrown out again?

Sounds intriguing. How solid is it though? I need something that pretty much works out of the box as I'm planning to use my Pi for work (!). I do a lot of text research and sourcing and need something that can give me a few workspaces at a time without crashing...

don't have a spare sd card/usb? you should also have something for backups.

i keep several installs of different setups, just shutdown & swap.

for example:
i've booted my manjaro i3 install & i'm seeing how close i can get it to look like my sway install.
right now i'm in tabbed mode, my eyes are bad today(high sugar level), so i'm running at 1280x720, not really good for tiling.

I keep seeing this recommendation about a spare SD card a backups. Are they generally a bit tricky? Is it better to run of a usb drive/SSD? I'm currently only practising on my Pi but can see a lot of really good uses for it. In case the Desktop pager doesn't work out how would it be with a double screen? Is there scope for this?

i been getting back to sd cards cause, there's just to much clutter/wires hanging out the back.
i use all 3 types, this i3 install is currently running from a usb 3 flash drive.

just use what you got.

double screen, sorry only have a single screen.
manjaro mate should be fine with dual screens.

I keep forgetting that there is a Ubuntu download for the Pi. How stable is this yet? And also how fast is it? If i remember right Ubuntu is quite big on memory...

you got to try it for yourself, we all think of "fast" differently.
stability, it's on par with other os's.
gnome has come a ways, it's around 600mb at boot & 1.3gb running a browser, but the new gnome caches a lot more for speed, if you look in the system monitor it will show you how much is actually cache.
