Got a 120GB Jmicron SSD usb3 drive, cannot boot due to "Unsupported Block size 4096"

Fri Jan 15, 2021 8:14 pm

When boot, I got error message
"Unsupported block size 4096"
Did i hit a hardware limitation on the ssd block/sector size ?
I know older drive use 512, and it works good in my pi 400.

I clone the same image to another drive with block size 512, it boot up.

any workaround? and direction?
thanks in advance

its a software limitation in the pi4 bootloader (in the eeprom)

ive talked to a guy on the #raspberrypi irc channel before with the same problem, and he found a util to re-format the disk into windows-xp compatibility mode, from the hdd manufacturer, and that fixed it for him

There's no support in the bootloader or more importantly start4.elf firmware for 4K sectors. It's a fairly invasive change to make in the start4.elf file-system, on the todo list.

Hello everyone,
is there any news on this topic? I have a fairly old SSD which I just removed from my laptop and wanted to use for my Pi. But I also have a block size of 4096.

Any news on this? I spent hours trying to figure out why my SSD would not boot on a headless Pi 4. Finally hooked up a monitor and saw the "Unsupported Block size 4096" msg during boot.

My drive is a 120 GB VANSUNY USB 3.2 Gen 2

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081W5VVDX?ps ... ct_details

It shows up as "JMicron Tech Media - 128.0 GB" in the Raspberry Pi Imager v1.6.2"

Is there a utility that will format this drive with a 512 block size?
Is there another SSD drive I can get that will work?

My main machine is a Mac. I have access to Windows 10.
