PI 400 USB-C power cable pulls out very easily

Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:12 pm

I recently purchased PI 400 kit. I am really pleased with the product, except that the USB-C power plug is very easy to pull out. If I move the computer even just a fraction of an inch, I risk having the computer lose power. Sometimes the plug will come completely out. I am using the PI power supply that came with the kit. Is this something I am just going to have to live with?

Unless you ask for a replacement, I guess so.

Do I do that with the retailer?

Correct. The faster you return the product the less trouble. If your retailer has an internet site, the procedure to return a product is certainly explained there.

IMHO that is definitely a defect with the Pi 400 or the power supply. Mine stays firmly attached. Do you have another power supply to test with? Or a Pi 4B to test that power supply with? It's probably the Pi 400 but if its the power supply it may be an easier deal to get another one versus another Pi 400.

I don't have a another power supply. I can use the cable for my tablet to check the jack for fit.

I'm running my Pi400 off a powerbank and the USB C plug / socket is a good fit. Now I've just tried the plug on the official PSU and that is also a good fit, although for where I am using my Pi400 the cable isn't long enough to reach a mains socket (one of the reasons why I'm using a powerbank). So the one question I would ask is how close is your mains socket (is there much 'give' in the cable)?

If the connection is excessively loose then I would contact the supplier as they are your first point of contact.

any USB-C cable is fine for testing the fit of the socket. No need to power the Pi400 for such simple test.

I tried USB-C cable from my tablet, tight fit. Plugged in the PI power supply again, tight fit. I am guessing that there was small piece of flashing or something else that was preventing the power supply connector from seating correctly. The tablet cable must have dislodged whatever was there. This is a weird problem which is now resolved. Thanks everybody.
