ubuntu on pi 3b back screen when logging in

I have setup a pi 3b with ubuntu 20.04 64 bit, when I have installed apt install ubuntu-desktop reboot get to the logon then login the screen goes black can see cursor and thats it
Tried changing the resolution to 1080 made no difference other than the resolution change
altered config.txt to do this is there another setting I can put in to fix this or is there something else i need to do
