Do I need Kernel fix for Arducam OV9281 on Ubuntu?

Hi!
(I am trying to solve this with the Arducam support too but I'm not sure how knowledgeable they are with Pi+Ubuntu )
I recently received this camera but am struggling to get it to work on my Ubuntu18.04 RPi4, or even to get it recognized by the system.
I compiled their test programs and ran through their setup procedure.
But I still can't even seem to get the r2c device to show up correctly.
I do get a /dev/i2c-1 (needs to be -0 I think) but it doesn't seem to have the pins registered. Or something like that.
Would I need to add something to the Kernel or modify it to be able to get this hardware recognized?
Is there a big difference in this aspect between Raspian and Ubuntu?
Cheers
