Rasperry pi 4 Ubuntu 20.04 installation with UI glithes

I have a 32 gigabyte sd card and a raspberry pi 4 I used the raspberry pi imager software to format a Ubuntu server image onto that 32gb sd card (x32 on first try x64 on second try) and I ran something like:
sudo apt-get update
then
sudo apt-get upgrade
then (to install the desktop)
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop
then
sudo reboot
And finally I boot to the desktop log in then I see the that sound/audio doesn't work and the "show application" doesn't work.
