Status of Ubuntu 18.04 and RPi 4?

Wed Feb 19, 2020 9:13 am

I am working on a project and I haven't decided whether to use a Raspberry Pi 4 or not. However, I will be running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 18.04. I need an LTS version for support reasons and cannot use any hacks to achieve hardware support (since this setup will have to be maintainable easily by people other than myself). So I will only rely on updates issued by canonical for 18.04.

My question is, is this achievable with the Pi 4 in terms of hardware support? Or is it necessary to install for example custom kernels to get all the hardware working? In that case, I'd rather go for a Raspberry Pi 3. I will be obtaining the Ubuntu image from here: https://ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi in either case. Ubuntu 19.10 or a non-LTS version are not options, unfortunately. Ubuntu 20.04 also comes out way too late.

Server versions do not come with a Desktop Environment, so if you need a Desktop Environment will Canonical Support if compatibility issues ?

Anyway the Raspberry Pi Foundation / Raspberry Pi Trading have no plans to support Ubuntu and this section of the forum is for Community Support of Ubuntu.

Why do you need 64bit? Seems to limit your options greatly. Raspbian32 is the best supported distro, for obvious reasons.

The hardware support for Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 19.10 is the same and all parts of the Raspberry Pi 4 work with the installed kernel. Is there a particular bit of hardware that you are concerned about?

Unsure why you are saying RPI 4 did not have 64bit ubuntu 18.04.04. In fact that the download pages shown multiple versions of 18.04.04 in 64bit/32bit for Raspberry. I currently have ubuntu 18.04.04 LTS 64bit on my Raspberry Pi 4 without any problem. I even have it bootable from SSD instead of from microSD. Its actually a dream machine. Compare to 19.10 which is not quite stable in my book due to the limitation of apps (not very fond of bleeding edge)

Look at this, i think this image is better for 4B than official Ubuntu download. Some Ubuntu packages are masked, because better are provided (kernel, firmware), but the rest is Ubuntu 18.04.4
