Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Dear all,
This is a great Ubuntu 16.04 .img that works like a charm on my RPi 3b+ with one exception. I have a problem with connecting reliably to wifi via the built-in broadcom module. I make 2 hypothesis:
1. whether the driver (which, as I understand by reading this forum is a copy-paste from Raspbian), or
2. faulty hardware

Just to let you know that I've tested 2 more usb wifi dongles and they work out-of-the-box as expected (Odroid module 4 - Ralink RT5572 and the dongle that comes with an old RPi2 kit - Ralink RT5370).

My feeling is that it's a problem about the wifi card's drivers, namely brcmfmac43455-sdio* files from /lib/firmware/brcm/

Please can you guide towards other alternatives to these drivers, that can still work with the current Ubuntu 16.04? I'd like to test them.

Hi folks-

New here and searching for exactly what the original poster of this thread was looking for: Ubuntu 16.04 specifically to support ROS Kinetic on a Pi 3B+. I finally discovered that the generous people at Ubiquity Robotics have solved the problem it would appear.

I downloaded the image, burned it, and it booted first try. The WiFi SSID is visible as documented, and after raking he leaves I'll press on from there. But certainly a breath of fresh air.

I hope this saves someone the pain I went through with a long list of failed attempts.

What desktop environment are you using? If you're using GNOME (ubuntu-desktop) then Ubuntu is going to be very slow. Try using a lighter desktop such as lubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop. Also, can you try downloading the Raspberry Pi 3 WiFi firmware by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi#WiFi

i tried your image with my raspberry pi 3 b+ but iam having issues with the network. Everytime i reboot the network is gone. if i enter "netplan apply" into the bash network is working again. Do you have any ideas how to fix that?

I was able to make a bootable USB image of Ubuntu Mate for the Raspberry Pi 3B & 3B+. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread

I made torrents of the images:

• This one is for USB drives
• This one is for SD cards

I went and made a user account purely to say thanks for this! Worked like a charm, after a very frustrating afternoon trying other approaches
