Ubuntu unity desktop environment

Sat May 02, 2015 8:48 pm

Has anyone been able to successfully port the ubuntu default desktop environment, I know they have ported many of the other default ones that ship with ubuntu based distros but I'm a a fan of unity and would love to have that as my desktop environment

Without graphics acceleration, any of the heavy effects-laden desktops are likely to suffer from unacceptably poor performance on the RPi. It's not meant to replace desktop PCs with video cards that cost as much as 4 RPis! Everything I've seen about such efforts indicates that the end result is usually failure or lousy experience. The fact that the RPi can run lightweight desktops is pretty impressive, all things considered. Keep realistic expectations and the RPi is a delight.

Why would anyone want to port that? It's horrible.

I wasn't trying to have unrealistic goals for the pi, I just know they where able to get the MATE desktop working, so I was just wondering if it was possible,

It will likely be possible in the future, but don't hold your breath.

That's a severe understatement.

Get over it, its been the default desktop in Ubuntu for 4+ years. I don't see any major decline in Ubuntu's popularity since it came out. The change from from Gnome 2 to unity wasn't a popular move at the time, I didn't like it, but when Microsoft did what it did to Windows with 8, it paled into utter insignificance. I learnt to live with it, I quite like it now. Gnome2 looks very dated alongside it.

It would probably not be a good move on a Pi2. The later versions do need a bit of horsepower behind them.

I had a play with unity8 on the pi ages ago. I think it has lots of potential, it's on my list of things to do again over the winter.

Its been a year since I last had a go, but I've been reading about the progress. Do you know why marius is using the arm64 kernel in his image? Things may work better under the armhf kernel. Is 16.04 still the recommended base?

Newer Pi kernels and Mesa3D are more mainstream so have a better chance to get working.
That's just my impression.
Also lots of the big stuff is only 64bit or soon will only have 64bit support.
That means Aarch64 builds.

I'm not technically involved nor able to answer your technical or contextual questions, sorry.
I just follow the subject and give a try from time to time.
I'll put a link to this subject on the UBports forum, though
Have a nice day
