USB WFi Driver Installation

Wed Apr 21, 2021 10:44 am

Reading recently about apparent good support for Linux from TP-Link I purchased an Archer AC600 adapter.

Unfortunately not recognised by any Ubuntu, OpernWRT or Raspberry Pi device.

Strangely followed advice on a Mint forum link and drivers installed fine on Ubuntu 18:04 and Mate 20:04 (On an old Atom 1 32 bit device) but failed to install on an Acer Atom running the R-Pi OS for PC, I get the following error message;
sudo make dkms_install
mkdir -p /usr/src/8812au-5.6.4.2_35491.20191025
cp -r * /usr/src/8812au-5.6.4.2_35491.20191025

Any suggestions appreciated.

Wow, thanks for reply but over 1500 messages in that thread so have little idea where to start.

I'm guessing as Ubuntu is based on Debian, as is R-Pi for PC then somehow it can work so will continue to experiment.

And simple instructions halfway down the first post on the first page.

sudo wget http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo install-wifi

MrEngman compile on Raspberry Pi OS because that is the supported Operating System, it will likely not work in Ubuntu..

Therefore you should have posted in the Ubuntu section to avoid us helpers wasting our time, have requested Mods to move post.
Fortunately no-one has wasted any time as my question related to The Raspberry Pi Desktop running on an Acer Atom. The reference to Ubuntu merely pointed out the driver problem was overcome with that system.

Good idea, I do have a Debian system on an external disk so may well try it on that.

I have a Pi 3B on which I have installed open-wrt - works great as a router but onboard WiFi has a limited range, hence the tp-link device.

So many Pi projects to keep one busy :ugeek:

Thanks Dougie,

Initial intention was to use this device with open-wrt on a Pi but that may be a major stumbling block too.

Pondering what to use the device for, I do have a few Pi 1s (were they ever called Pi Ones) but they are happily connected to ethernet.
